Shugie McFee fires up the stairs and kills Fähnrich zur See Iwan Oldekop, who was guarding the first floor. This allows Hector McSnapcase to charge up the stairs shouting the old McSnapcase battle-cry “Póg Mo Thóin”. Hector shoots and Matrose Heinrich Heinz is pinned and crawls to cover.
Kapitänleutnant
Günther Prien who was on the floor above, sees his chance and shouting the old
submariners battle-cry “Scheiße” runs
down the stairs, two at a time, fires his MP40 and misses McSnapcase
completely.
Diana
Mitford shoots out through the back passage and deals Labalaba a fatal wound.
Enraged by
this, the commandos pour into the bar area, guns blazing. Mosley is shot dead,
Mitford and Spode are both wounded. Bill Coleman manages to drag himself to his
feet even though he has been wounded twice.
The
remainder of No. 2 Section pile in behind them.
No. 3 Section
regroup to assault the Pichard Inn from the front.
Ronnie Biggs
and ‘Meat Pot’ have been detached to attack the stables from the front now. A
PIAT round and a hand grenade both successfully fly through the stable door.
The scene
inside the stable is now reminiscent of Dante’s Inferno. Four dead Fallschirmjäger
and two wounded, one badly.
Alf Tupper scales the railings at the front of
the Pilchard Inn, runs across the courtyard and kills Leutnant Beckenbauer.
There are hardly any Fallschirmjäger left alive, it’s all down to the
Kriegsmarine now.
To be continued...
