Part 4 - Operation Pilchard (Firefight)

Bill Coleman manages to roll aside to allow Stavros the Greek a shot as he too tries to enter the bar. He misses and Spode gets lucky and kills him with one shot. Stavros is down and the bar entrance is proving a death-trap.

The guard with the sausage staggers to his feet and gets off a shot but misses.

No. 2 Section open fire and there’s not much left of the sausage or the guard. Labalaba fires his Lewis gun through the doorway but fails to hit any Black Shorts who are taking cover behind the bar. Captain Druce fires into the bar too but misses Mosley.

Meanwhile the Laird and Shughie McFee enter through a window. The skirl of the pipes is heard throughout the Pilchard Inn. ‘Tickle’ McScrotum is still trying to climb through his window.

Three Fallschirmjäger take cover behind the stolen Austin 7. Seaman Sid Staines takes careful aim with his rifle and kills two of them outright. (An astonishing amount of 10s were rolled on D10). Staines then runs out of ammo and has to pause to reload.

The rest of No. 4 Section close up to the railings and open fire. Leutnant Beckenbauer is pinned again, in the open.

No. 3 Section kill a Fallschirmjäger and start to move up in support of No. 3 Section.

The Fallschirmjäger in the stable try to recover from the horror of the PIAT round exploding in a confined space. One dies of his wounds and the rest are still prone on the stable floor.

McAuslan, trying to recover from being pinned decides he’s had enough and leaves the fight. His feet won’t touch when they catch up with him after this raid!

An overall view of the action at this stage.

To be continued...
