Part 6 - Operation Pilchard (A L'Outrance)

The Fallschirmjäger who was pinned and one of the wounded from inside the stable manage to make stand at the stable door. Peter Fleming kills one outright with his rifle. The other takes a wound but pins ‘Meat Pot’ in the process. The Reverend ‘Stinker’ Pinker displays a bit of ‘muscular’ Christianity and opens fire with his Thompson.

Fire is exchanged from the ground with the second-floor balcony. Both Obersteuermann Hans Sammann and Stabsmaschinist Gustav Böhm are wounded.

In the bar, the weight of commandos piling through the back door has overwhelmed the Black Shorts. Mosley, Mitford and Spode are all killed. Sergeant Major ‘Shut-Up’ Williams is leading the charge. Even Bill Coleman has regained his feet, suffering from two wounds. Karamjeet Singh was also wounded in the exchange of fire.

Alf Tupper has raced ahead (as he would) and has entered the main door of the inn. Matt Braddock has managed to climb over the railings even though he is wounded. His radioman, Wackford Squeers is with him. CPO Pertwee is still pinned and Staines has caught him up after reloading.

Great drama is now being played out on the landing of the first floor. Prien has fired first and hit McSnapcase who is now wounded. Hector returns fire and Prien is down. Kapitänleutnant Günther Prien, Iron Cross First and Second Class, U-boat War Badge with Diamonds and Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves has fallen in action.

Shughie McFee and ‘Tickle’ McScrotum are up the stairs in a flash. Stepping in front of their Laird, they both shoot at Oberleutnant Hans Bothmann who is guarding the second-floor landing. They both miss.

Meanwhile, Matrose Heinrich Heinz has come back out of hiding and is out for revenge.

‘Buster’ Edwards has made his way up the external stairs to the first-floor and will enter the Pilchard Inn behind McScrotum. Hector wants Edwards and his Bren gun to lead the final assault.

Part 5 - Operation Pilchard (Carnage)

Shugie McFee fires up the stairs and kills Fähnrich zur See Iwan Oldekop, who was guarding the first floor. This allows Hector McSnapcase to charge up the stairs shouting the old McSnapcase battle-cry Póg Mo Thóin”. Hector shoots and Matrose Heinrich Heinz is pinned and crawls to cover.

Kapitänleutnant Günther Prien who was on the floor above, sees his chance and shouting the old submariners battle-cry “Scheiße” runs down the stairs, two at a time, fires his MP40 and misses McSnapcase completely.

Diana Mitford shoots out through the back passage and deals Labalaba a fatal wound.

Enraged by this, the commandos pour into the bar area, guns blazing. Mosley is shot dead, Mitford and Spode are both wounded. Bill Coleman manages to drag himself to his feet even though he has been wounded twice.

The remainder of No. 2 Section pile in behind them.

No. 3 Section regroup to assault the Pichard Inn from the front.

Ronnie Biggs and ‘Meat Pot’ have been detached to attack the stables from the front now. A PIAT round and a hand grenade both successfully fly through the stable door.

The scene inside the stable is now reminiscent of Dante’s Inferno. Four dead Fallschirmjäger and two wounded, one badly.

Alf Tupper scales the railings at the front of the Pilchard Inn, runs across the courtyard and kills Leutnant Beckenbauer. There are hardly any Fallschirmjäger left alive, it’s all down to the Kriegsmarine now.

Part 4 - Operation Pilchard (Firefight)

Bill Coleman manages to roll aside to allow Stavros the Greek a shot as he too tries to enter the bar. He misses and Spode gets lucky and kills him with one shot. Stavros is down and the bar entrance is proving a death-trap.

The guard with the sausage staggers to his feet and gets off a shot but misses.

No. 2 Section open fire and there’s not much left of the sausage or the guard. Labalaba fires his Lewis gun through the doorway but fails to hit any Black Shorts who are taking cover behind the bar. Captain Druce fires into the bar too but misses Mosley.

Meanwhile the Laird and Shughie McFee enter through a window. The skirl of the pipes is heard throughout the Pilchard Inn. ‘Tickle’ McScrotum is still trying to climb through his window.

Three Fallschirmjäger take cover behind the stolen Austin 7. Seaman Sid Staines takes careful aim with his rifle and kills two of them outright. (An astonishing amount of 10s were rolled on D10). Staines then runs out of ammo and has to pause to reload.

The rest of No. 4 Section close up to the railings and open fire. Leutnant Beckenbauer is pinned again, in the open.

No. 3 Section kill a Fallschirmjäger and start to move up in support of No. 3 Section.

The Fallschirmjäger in the stable try to recover from the horror of the PIAT round exploding in a confined space. One dies of his wounds and the rest are still prone on the stable floor.

McAuslan, trying to recover from being pinned decides he’s had enough and leaves the fight. His feet won’t touch when they catch up with him after this raid!

An overall view of the action at this stage.

Part 3 - Operation Pilchard (Deception)

Claude Miggins appears to be an innocent chimney sweep. However, he is in reality a commando in Snapforce in disguise. His wife runs a very popular pie-shop in London.

Claude presents his forged papers to Leutnant Beckenbauer, the commander of the Fallschirmjäger squad detailed to guard the prisoners until the arrival of Field Marshal von Leeb.

Arnold is waved through and makes his first visit the cook house. Michel le Roux is aware of the commando’s plan and has been awaiting Claude’s arrival. Claude hands over the meat dosed with crushed sleeping pills and Hector’s plan commences.

Michel makes his usual late-afternoon rounds to feed the guard dogs, this time with the doctored meat. The dogs gradually drop off to sleep without arousing the guard’s suspicions.

Hector’s plan is to effect a silent entry to the inn. Claude makes his way upstairs, having to pass a guard on each floor.

I gave him a diminishing percentage chance of passing each guard. 95% at the ground floor, 85% at the first floor and so on. The plan was that he would make his way to the top floor and kill the guard or guards outside Prince Phillip’s door. He would then stick his brushes up the chimney as a signal to the waiting commandos. He would then hold the top floor until relieved.

The plan starts to unravel as Claude tries to get past a very suspicious Obergrefreiter Albert Zöller. Something has given the game away (Miggins failed a percentage throw of 75%) and Zöller starts to raise his weapon. Claude manages to draw his Fairburn Sykes fighting knife from inside his brushes and kills Zöller on the landing. Unfortunately for Claude, the noise of the fight alerts Kapitänleutnant Günther Prien who is in the room on the left. Prien opens the door and fires his MP40.

Claude dives back down the stairs where he is killed by another alerted matelot, Matrose Friedrich Engelmann.

Giving up on the silent entry, McSnapcase gives the order and the commandos advance to contact. Labalaba wounds the sausage-eating sentry with his Lewis gun.

This opens up the way for Bill Coleman, the Aussie, to batter down the back door and burst into the bar, behind ‘Camp’ Freddie, the inn’s long-serving one-eyed barman. The Black Shorts who had popped into the bar for a pre-dinner aperitif can only stand and stare. Regaining their wits (what little they have), Spode, Mosley and Diana Mitford draw their pistols and open fire. Bill takes two wounds and is pinned behind the bar but he’s not dead yet!

3 and 4 Sections advance across the road and open up on any visible targets. Matt Braddock is keeping the radio net open to allow comms between all four sections.

The Fallschirmjäger in the stable start to emerge to join the defence. The first one out is wounded, the next killed and the third pinned behind the water pump. They are taking some very accurate fire from both sides.

By the main door, Leutnant Beckenbauer dived inside for cover as two more of his men ran out. The sentry on the steps to the first-floor door pins MacAuslan down behind the railings.

Seeing that there are more Fallschirmjäger to come out of the stable, Captain Peter Fleming sends ‘Meat Pot’ around the corner with the PIAT. ‘Meat Pot’ aims the PIAT at a small window on the road side of the stable and fires. I gave him a 50/50 chance to get it through the window.

More by luck than judgement the round goes straight through the window and explodes inside. It is carnage inside as one Fallschirmjäger is killed outright, two are wounded and the other three are pinned.

Prien starts to organise the Kriegsmarine into some semblance of order. No time to mourn Zöller now.

Meanwhile, up the back passage, 1 and 2 Sections start to assault the inn. Stavros is right behind Bill Coleman. Captain Druce is climbing over the compost bin in his black silk topper. Hector is trying to force a window as the door to the bar is causing a bottleneck.

Now that there’s movement on all floors of the inn I have had to disassemble it. It’s now like trying to play tri-dimensional chess in Star Trek!
